Built in the seventeenth century, the Canal du Midi was designed by Pierre-Paul Riquet to connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and was formerly used for the transport of goods and people.
With its 64 locks, the Canal du Midi travels nearly 240 kilometers from Toulouse, in Haute-Garonne, to the Etang de Thau, near Sète in the Hérault.
